Barry
Smith (born 21 August 1952 in Buffalo, NY). Barry began his
coaching career in 1975 with Elmira College where he won three
times the title of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference
and participated once in the finale of the NCAA. After six years
at the Elmira College he left North America and in the following
years he coached club teams and national teams in Sweden, Norway
and Italy.
He participated with the Swedish national team at the Olympic
Winter Games 1998 in Nagano as co-coach and at the World Cup of
Hockey as assistant coach.
Barry Smith can look back on a long and very successful
career as an assistant and associate coach in the NHL, where he
cooperated successfully with coaching legend Scotty Bowman and
Wayne Gretzky, amongst others.
In the NHL he already worked for well known teams, as the
Buffalo Sabres, Pittsburgh Penguins, Detroit Red Wings, Phoenix
Coyotes, and Vancouver Canucks, winning five Stanley Cups along
the way.
In 2008, he became head coach of SKA St. Petersburg of the
Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). After being a pro scout for the
Chicago Blackhawks, he is currently head coach of HC Lugano in
Switzerland NLA.
